About the Community
Situated on the southern shore of Georgian Bay, the Municipality of Meaford is a fascinating four-season destination that has it all: great live theatre and concerts, fresh local food, unique shopping, nature at your doorstep, a beautiful harbor and so much more.

The quaint and charming historic downtown district features Meaford Hall – a restored 300-seat theatre, concert and cinema venue – plus unique boutiques, delicious eateries and services of all kinds. Just a few minutes away and you’ll find acres of rolling countryside, charming historic villages, sandy beaches and unspoiled natural areas.

Meaford Hall is the premier arts and cultural centre in Southern Georgian Bay. For nearly a century, the Hall has echoed with music, drama, and debate, serving as the political, social and cultural heart of Meaford. Newly restored, renovated and outfitted with state-of-the-art staging, Meaford Hall is a four-season venue which hosts a wide variety of live entertainment, business events, and social gatherings.

Meaford offers a variety of activities and events to please any crowd, highlighting an artisan community and paying homage to its past. The award winning year round culinary trail, the Apple Pie Trail, travels throughout Grey County.

Meaford’s story begins in 1835. This area was surveyed as a means to give land to two groups of people: War of 1812 veterans and descendants of the United Empire Loyalties, who remained loyal to the Crown during the American Revolution. St. Vincent Township was originally named the Township of Zero. This name was given because the northern tip of the township was as far north as you could go in the area. The area to the east of St. Vincent (now The Blue Mountains) was named the Township of Alta. It was called Alta because it was believed that area was the highest part of Ontario. Kerr said the time the Dundalk area had not been surveyed. Those named lasted until 1845 when surveyor Willian Gibbard officially laid out the Town of Meaford. He was responsible for naming the new town and all of its streets. He decided on the name Meaford after the Earl of St. Vincent’s home in England – Meaford Hall.
